- I think it's one of the guardian dogs (they are usually dogs, this one looks a bit more monster-ish)that are placed near entrences to the shrines. This one was sitting beside a very old stone with inscriptions in the middle of the rice fields. So i assume it has to do something with protecting the crops? It's mouth is also open, meaning he is saying the first letter of the alphabet あ (A). There should be a second 'dog' that says the last letter ん (n) but it wasn't there.
